This is a general resource, not personalised tax advice. If your situation is complex, check GOV.UK or speak to a qualified adviser.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax timetable
MTD for Income Tax is being introduced in stages. GOV.UK guidance says you need to use it if all of the following apply: you are a sole trader or landlord registered for Self Assessment, you get income from self-employment or property, and your qualifying income is above the relevant threshold.
| Tax return used to check qualifying income | Qualifying income threshold | MTD start date |
|---|---|---|
| 2024/25 | More than £50,000 | 6 April 2026 |
| 2025/26 | More than £30,000 | 6 April 2027 |
| 2026/27 | More than £20,000 | 6 April 2028 |
Qualifying income is not the same thing as profit after expenses. HMRC reviews Self Assessment returns and says it will write to people who need to start using MTD, but it remains your responsibility to check if and when the rules apply to you.
If you are within MTD, you may need compatible software to keep digital records, send quarterly updates to HMRC, and submit your tax return through software. If you are not within MTD, do not assume the quarterly update dates apply to you.

How long to keep sole trader records
GOV.UK says self-employed people must keep records for at least 5 years after the 31 January submission deadline for the relevant tax year. For 2026/27, that means keeping normal Self Assessment business records until at least 31 January 2033.
If you file very late or HMRC opens a check, you may need to keep records for longer. For a simple breakdown, read sole trader record keeping requirements.
